Among potential blog topics, do-it-yourself, food, health and fashion typically rank as the most popular. Hugo Sebastian Hirsch, a blogging expert who also offers consulting services, has worked with countless bloggers over the years and believes he understands why there is so much room for what some still perceive as a niche topic.
According to Hirsch, information about these types of subjects has not always been properly disseminated in spite of widespread interest, so there are a lot of people who have been thirsting for the expert advice that is now freely available. Additionally, Hirsch says that the fact that there are always new innovations and trends among these subjects makes it easy for bloggers to write about something fresh.
“Many bloggers begin with a subject in which they have a great deal of expertise, and at first they feel like a wellspring of information,” explains Hirsch. “After a period of time, however, a sense of staleness sets in if there are not frequent developments relating to their subject or new methods of applying an aspect of their subject to something different. With DIY, food, fashion, health and the like, there is always something new and interesting going on, and the content that these blogs produce is often evergreen in nature, which is incredibly valuable from a profitability prospective.”
The DIY boom in particular has fascinated Hirsch, who actually predicted long ago that blogs on this particular subject would do exceptionally well.
“People are drawn to do-it-yourself projects for a variety of reasons, and many of those reasons have to do with practicality,” begins Hirsch. “There are no labor costs and no markups on materials, so many view this as a cost-saving measure, but I think the true value for most people is in the opportunity to create something useful with their hands. There is a very real sense of pride that comes with making something from scratch, and it doesn’t seem to matter whether it is a scarf or a coffee table.”
As for the continued popularity of these blogs, Hirsch notes that these are subjects that most people find both fascinating and enjoyable, particularly when they find that they are capable of creating something unique and interesting simply by accessing the information that is made so readily available. Whether someone is looking for information on how to crochet a blanket or how to bake an apple pie, these blogs provide interesting and useful insights into subjects in which many people are unfamiliar.
